Did you know that as we breathe and live life, day -on today, we also accumulate toxins into our
bodies?
That’s right we are exposed to toxins on a fairly consistent basis. Some of these accumulate due
to our diet and environment around us and others are due to our lifestyle. If one smokes and
drinks alcohol on a regular basis beyond limit, one tends to accumulate more toxins.
What is addiction?
Addiction is a physical or psychological need for a habit forming substance, such as drug or
alcohol.
De addiction is removal of this unhealthy habit or so called toxins and creating healthy habit.
At some point in time, we have all come across people who smoke. How often these people make
resolutions to quit smoking and never end up keeping up with it. Quitting smoking can be a long
and hard process, but everyday one must decide not to smoke.
Since time immemorial, people have considered alcohol to be an aphrodisiac. However, this myth
has been busted time and again by the side effects of excessive alcohol. Alcohol, if consumed in
unnatural quantity over a period of time can turn conditions like 'brewer's droop', which otherwise
might be temporary into permanent impotence, depression, chronic liver diseases etc.
The only remedy to overcome this unhealthy habits is to create healthy habits among oneself and
try to remove the toxins accumulated or so called detoxification.
The good news is that our body has a means of processing and eliminating these toxins.
Detoxification refers to the removal and the elimination of the toxic substances from the body.
When one makes healthy changes in ones diet or lifestyle , one can support or even accelerate the
process.
Various methods are used to achieve that. Like drinking plenty of water, adequate sleep, healthy
food, overcome stress, and exercise regularly.

Lets see each one in detail:
1. Drinking plenty of water: The disadvantages of alcohol and coffee are aplenty and one
among them is their tendency to accumulate toxins in your body. Removing them from
your diet goes a long way in removing toxins. Instead take atleast 3 liters of water in a day.
After you have woken up after a night out where you had lots to drink, you are bound to
have a hangover as alcohol is known to dehydrate the body. Thus it is advisable that you
drink plenty of water and other fluids. Always carry a water bottle with you, wake up to
drink 500 to 800 ml of water every morning, sip water throughout the day, if you drink
alcohol drink one glass of water for every drink you have.
2. Take less stress: When you are under over stress, your mind as well as your body shows
clear signs of that. In instances of over stress, the body releases the stress hormone that
may provide a temporary boost of energy, but manifolds the accumulation of toxin in the
body. Listen to soothing music, indulge in activities you like to do the most, spend time
with family and friends and keep yourself away from electronic items lie cell phone, tabs
etc.
3. Include fruits in your diet: The advantages of fruits do not require an introduction. They are
well known and unanimously acknowledged. The reason why doctors vehemently insist on
including at least one fruit in the diet is due to its ability to cleanse the body from the daily
assemblage of toxins in the body.
4. Eat vegetables which contain fiber: Vegetables like beets, cabbages and radishes, those
which are rich fiber serve as excellent detoxifying foods. Eat timely small meals. Jump
start your day with a heavy breakfast and end with light dinner. Never skip meals.
5. Drink green tea: Drinking green tea is a habit that has recently developed but in little time
has gained immense popularity. This habit is credited not only with weight loss but also
has tremendous ability to eliminate toxins from the body.
6. Indulge in exercise or yoga: Another way to ensure that your body is benefit of the harmful
chemicals is by indulging in various exercises or yoga. Both the practices significantly
improve the physical health and at the same time detoxify the body. Exercise and keep
yourself fit to gain immunity and health. There are various forms of yogasanas which help
one to quit excessive smoking and alcohol. Meditation strongly helps to improve ones
mind and body.
7. Sleep: Studies have shown that less sleep raises the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone
which can lead to more complications including weight gain. So one must have atleast 7
hours of sleep a day to stay healthy.

In Ayurveda and Homeopathic system of medicines we have certain herbal medicines which can
be used to de addict oneself. This can also be made into practice.
Good health practices are more than just learnt, they become a regular habit and a way of
life.
